Yukon Search & Rescue Squadron
AK Civil Air Patrol

Message from the Commander

As Squadron Commander, I offer my heartfelt greetings from the beautiful, remote and rugged interior of Alaska. The Yukon Squadron is a senior (adult) squadron of the Alaska Wing, Civil Air Patrol, the official civilian auxillary of the United States Air Force. We are based at Pitka Airport in Galena, the site of the former Galena Air Force Base.

Our squadron covers a high-traffic area for aviation, both private and commercial, passenger and cargo, that extends east to Tanana in the direction of Fairbanks, south to near Denali towards Anchorage, west out to the Bering Sea and north beyond Huslia in some of the most rugged country in the world. This region is entirely dependent on air travel. Local communities include Galena, Ruby, Koyukuk, Nulato and Kaltag on the Yukon and Huslia and Hughes to the north on the Koyukuk Riover and Unalakleet on the Bering Sea Coast. We can serve as a staging area for CAP aircraft from all over the state, if needed to do so.

Our volunteer members are dedicated to protecting this region. Flying in bitter cold weather and in areas inaccessible to anything except aircraft or snowmobiles is a unique challenge that we embrace. Our members include not only pilots, but observers, medical personnel, teachers, technicians, administrative and former military members, among others.

Please look around our website, the Alaska CAP Wing website and the CAP's national website. We hope you find it interesting and that you might consider joining CAP if you want an exciting, challenging and rewarding volunteer pursuit that also serves our great Nation.
